Expanding skin can sometimes leave stretchmarks in its wake, and the formula of Mothercare’s oil - a blend of rosehip oil, borage oil, and coconut oil - is intended to make skin supple and improve skin elasticity, thus help prevent stretchmarks.
Meanwhile, firming borage oil, derived from the seeds of the plant, is reputed to have excellent anti-inflammatory properties and act as a moisturiser. Also, it’s said to have an uplifting and euphoric effect and may aid in the prevention of mood swings. For a pregnant woman, this may well be a good thing.
Coconut oil has long been used to moisturise skin but it apparently also lightens existing stretchmarks. However, I think in the case of the Mothercare it’s your body stretch mark oil, it’s an ingredient used mainly for its scent.
What we love
I’ve used the Mothercare it’s your body stretch mark oil all over my 18-week pregnant body. It rubs in easily, and although it’s quite greasy, it still absorbs quickly. And a little does go a long way.
The price is right, too. At £6.99 for 100ml, just giving it a go is hardly going to break the bank. It can be used after the birth too, so if you really like this product, you can stick with it without worrying about the cost.
The initial scent of the Mothercare it’s your body stretch mark oil is like candyfloss. Mmmm, how delicious is that?!
What to watch out for
A gorgeous aroma maybe, but after a very short while that sweet candyfloss smell I mentioned disappears, leaving behind the scent of coconut oil only, to the point where I felt I was using a cheap brand of suntan lotion.
Mothercare presents its oil in a basic box packaging and I struggled with the tiny white print of the writing on the sides. Also, on the front it says ‘with rosehip and borage oil’. There’s no mention of coconut oil until you study the ingredients. I think this is somewhat misleading as the most prominent element to me is in fact the coconut oil.
The bottle is plastic and when I first used it I gave it a good squeeze. I simply was not expecting so much to run out and ended up doused in it. So watch how you go - the hole in the top of the bottle is bigger than you think.
Who is the Mothercare it’s your body stretch mark oil best for?
Coconut-loving mums-to-be after a good value product.
The Mothercare it’s your body stretch mark oil absorbed well and a little goes a long way. However, it’s disappointing that its initial deliciously attractive scent disappears so quickly.
