The chair and the table are separate items. To use it as a highchair, you turn the table on its side and slot the chair on top. It’s made of wood, with a plastic removable tray. It’s got a crotch strap and safety bar that you can remove completely if you don’t want to use it as a highchair anymore.
You have to assemble the Mothercare Pine cube convertible highchair yourself. It was a bit fiddly to put it together, and took me about 20 minutes in all.
What we love
The fact that the Mothercare Pine cube convertible highchair turns into a table and chair is great, because it extends the life of the product beyond the time you might be using a highchair, and means that it’s more versatile. It’s also great to have one product that does two things, especially if space is at a premium. If Martha’s eating on her own, she likes to sit at the low table, as I think it makes her feel grown up.
The Mothercare Pine cube convertible highchair is also really compact – I like the way the legs are straight, rather than splayed out, so I don’t constantly trip up over them. It also means that the highchair takes up less room than some others.
The tray is very easy to take on and off, so you can use the highchair with it or without it. You can also fix it at any distance from your child that you like, which is useful.
What to watch out for
If you want to take the safety bar out when you are using the chair separately, then I find that you have to loosen the screws a little. If I don’t take it out, then I have to lift Martha in and out of the seat.
The Mothercare Pine cube convertible highchair doesn’t come with a safety harness, so you’ll have to buy one separately – I don’t think it would be safe to use without it. You also have to buy a cushion insert separately, if you want one.
Some mums complain that if their babies wriggle a lot they bang their heads on the wooden back of the chair, but I didn’t find that a problem with Martha.
In my experience, children get quite possessive about their buggies and highchairs. If you buy this for your first child, and then have another one, they may not take kindly to giving up ‘their’ table and chair to the new sibling!
Finally, it’s not a chair that’s going to win any style awards, so if ‘the look’ is important to you, there are more stylish wooden highchairs around, albeit without the dual function.
Who is the Mothercare Pine cube convertible highchair best for?
Families with limited space that want products that can multitask.
The Mothercare Pine cube convertible highchair is a nice wooden highchair that does two jobs and is inexpensive. While it’s not the most stylish wooden highchair available, it does give you options when it comes to baby and toddler mealtimes.
