Pros

  • Discreet, inexpensive, supportive for short periods

Cons

  • May be uncomfortable, limited use

The Mothercare Support Belt offers some support, but is a little lacking when it comes to comfort.

Even the smallest baby bump can put a strain on the back or just be uncomfortably heavy, particularly in later pregnancy, but relief is available. The Support Belt - an elasticated belt, designed to support the bump throughout your pregnancy - is available from Mothercare. Like the top of a pair of big knickers, the Support Belt features an elasticated band that goes under and supports the bump, and a wide piece of fabric to pull up over the bump.

What we love

The Support Belt is easy to wear and easy to wash (it can be machine washed, but can't be tumble dried). Because it features a piece of fabric you can pull up over your bump, it's also handing for bridging the gap if you're wearing pre-pregnancy clothes with a tendency to rise up or gape open. You can also wear it after the baby's born to cover your tummy while breastfeeding.

What to watch out for

I found the Support Belt comfortable to wear for short periods, but uncomfortable after prolonged wear. I actually took it off on a tube platform after a long day in London. (Mums online seem to have the same problem, plus there are complaints of the band slipping down and the elastic digging in). Fastened with velcro, it's actually quite tricky to both pull it tight enough to be of support and to get the velcro fastened correctly. And the corners of the velcro can be a bit scratchy and irritating too.

Who is the Mothercare Support Belt best for?

Mums who need light support and/or tummy coverage.

MadeForMums verdict

The idea is good – both the support and the coverage – but unfortunately the execution lets the product down.
