Not only did it come complete with extensions to fit up to 136cm but it also had two-way opening, one-hand closing and triple locking. That would mean it would be easy for me to get in and out of, but difficult for my toddler to open. Perfect.
Priced at £44.99 and with a see-through panel, I imagined the Mothercare Ultimate Collection pressure fix swing shut safety gate would be stylish as well as practical. I couldn’t wait for it to arrive so I could try it out.
What we love
The Mothercare Ultimate Collection pressure fix swing shut safety gate did have extensions, which meant, for once, we had a safety gate we could fit.
What to watch out for
Unfortunately the Mothercare Ultimate Collection pressure fix swing shut safety gate is a massive disappointment.
The gate wasn’t as good-looking as I expected with its chunky black frame and black etchings on the clear panel.
The diagrams weren’t that easy to follow. There were only a few steps, but I failed to understand the instructions, and had to ask my husband for help. He has made a lot of flat pack furniture so eventually had the gate in position. But as I went to try the swing gate to understand how it went, the entire lock mechanism fell apart in my hand.
I tried to put it back together, as did my husband, but it was broken. All we could do was take down the gate, which was in several pieces by the time we reached the bottom of the stairs.
Chunky looking, but surprisingly flimsy, the Mothercare Ultimate Collection pressure fix swing shut safety gate was hard to fit and easy to break.
In one way I’m relieved it didn’t survive the installation. At least it hadn’t been put through the hardest test of all – containing my very strong toddler Anais.
Who is the Mothercare Ultimate Collection pressure fix swing shut safety gate best for?
Parents willing to try out a gate that may not survive installation.
The Mothercare Ultimate Collection pressure fix swing shut safety gate sounds promising but is disappointing. It isn’t as stylish as you’d imagine, it’s hard to fit and it fell apart during installation. While this probably won’t happen with every gate, it does make you pause for thought over its quality and robustness.
