What we love
The Mothercare Waterproof Mattress and Sheet Protector is easy to lay down making it perfect if your tot is about to fall asleep at Granny’s and you realise you’ve not sorted their bed out. It is easy to remove AND saves on washing (always a good thing as far as I’m concerned) and because it can be just laid on the bed or cot it’s great for popping down if your tot has an afternoon nap on a couch or spare bed.
If the bed is wet in the night, it’s easy to whip the Mothercare Waterproof Mattress and Sheet Protector off (great for sleepwalking mums!) and the best part is, it really is waterproof. It soaks up a good full nappy’s worth. I even tried pouring water out of a jug straight on to it and it still didn’t come through.
It’s also handy if a child is ill and may be sick in the night, particularly as its washable up to 60 degrees, which is hotter than some similar products. It can also be tumble dried (horray!) and is made from environmentally friendly non-UPV materials. The backing is non-slip – and even my very wriggly nearly-three-year-old didn’t move it too much.
What to watch out for
The idea is that you lay it on the middle section of the bed where it’s likely to be most needed (whether you’re a mum-to-be who needs a bit of extra protection, or a toddler who hasn’t quite mastered getting up in the night to go for a wee).
This works fine in theory, and I’m sure would work for most people – but Arron is the world’s most restless sleeper. It’s not unusual for me to check in on him in the middle of the night and find that his feet are on the pillow and his head’s pointing down the bed. So if your child’s a big-time night wriggler, the Mothercare Waterproof Mattress and Sheet Protector may not be the ideal choice.
This is also a very visible form of bed protection, which some children who are very proud of being mostly dry may question it being on their bed at all! At £16.99, it’s not cheap and you really need two if you’re going to use them for any length of time, so you have one in the wash if it gets wet and one to put on in the middle of the night. But as a standby for going away, afternoon naps and so on, one would be fine.
Who is Mothercare Waterproof Mattress and Sheet Protector best for?
Mums-to-be who want to protect their own mattress, or mums with toddlers who are still learning to be dry at night and who often visit friends and relatives overnight, or who have young visitors to stay.
The Mothercare Waterproof Mattress and Sheet Protector is easy to lay down in a hurry and ideal if you are visiting friends or relatives but it’s not great for big wrigglers or proud tots.
