Pros

  • Very absorbent; extremely durable; poppers hard for toddlers to undo

Cons

  • Not made in the UK; poppers a bit more fiddly than velcro to do up

Motherease Sandy’s are soft, cloth nappies that are durable and absorbent. With a reasonably quick drying time and no Velcro, Sandy’s are mum- and baby-friendly.

Motherease is a Canadian company, set up by Erika and Rick Froese in 1991 when they decided to design a new style of cloth nappy for the second of their five sons. Sandy’s, named after their son Sandy, is a nappy that comes in a range of sizes to fit babies of different ages. ??You can choose between cotton, organic cotton, and bamboo, and a range of colours. You’ll need an absorbent wrap over the top. Motherease are manufactured in Canada, but their carbon footprint is small as the factory is wind-powered, and they ship the nappies to the UK by sea.

What we love

Motherease Sandy’s are really soft and very absorbent - ideal if your baby wees a lot! They’re cleverly designed so that the drying time isn’t too long, even though they’re quite thick, as they lie very flat to dry.??They also look lovely on. I love the poppers on the sides of the nappies, as my baby can’t undo them as he does with Velcro! I’ve had some Sandy’s nappies for years, and they’re very durable and look good forever.

What to watch out for

These aren’t the quickest drying nappies available – because they soak up lots of wee, they also soak up lots of water! If you’re in a hard water area, the bamboo ones might be a better choice as the cotton ones can go a bit hard.

They’re not UK made, although they do employ UK suppliers and marketing. The poppers make them fiddly to do up - hard if your baby’s a wriggler like mine! However, this also means they’re harder for your baby to undo himself, which is a bonus.

Who are Motherease Sandy's best for?

Mums after a reusable that’s absorbent enough for night-time use.

MadeForMums verdict

As they last forever and you need to buy a range of sizes, Sandy’s are a good choice if you’re planning to use them on more than one baby. The poppers, while fiddly, make them a great alternative to Velcro nappies, as they mean the nappy is comfy around the tummy. The range of Motherease wraps to go with the nappies are considered to be the best around by many cloth mums.
