This buy-only-what-you-need approach is a big plus and big downside. You get to custom-build your buggy, and don’t pay for things you don’t want. That said, this individual pricing can make things really add up, especially when you compare the final price tag with cheaper all-inclusive buggies.
In terms of cost, the Urban Rider chassis is £269, and the deluxe seat unit is £119 – a total of £388. The fabric carrycot is £149 and the footmuff £40. The Duo Seat (so you can push twins about) is £159. If you want to turn the Mutsy Urban Rider into a travel system, you can purchase the Mutsy Traveller car seat and adaptor for £159, or the Mutsy Safe2Go car seat for £119. A wide range of other accessories are also available.
These seats and various accessory choices are the same for the Mutsy Urban Rider and Mutsy 4Rider Single Spoke – the difference is the chassis.
What we like
The Mutsy Urban Rider has loads to offer. The option of a forward or rear facing seat, 5-position telescopic handle, lie-back seat, pneumatic anti-puncture tyres, quick release race-bearing wheels, and a hide away mini pump.
It’s an absolute cinch to steer and it corners brilliantly – one-handed supermarket shopping has never been so easy. This is due to an articulated device that allows the front and rear wheels to move independently – just like big trucks making deliveries in small villages or tight London streets.
For those with more than one baby onboard, it has the Duo Seat for two babies and a step-up board for older siblings.
The Mutsy Urban Rider also it folds up really easily though you’ll sit need both your hands to do so. When in the folded position the quick-release wheels can be easily removed to make a very compact frame for those tight on space in their car boot.
Mutsy Urban Rider has a huge range of add-ons (from dinner trays to car seats to create a travel system). It comes in an range of fab colours, too.
Our little Edith was as impressed with the Mutsy Urban Rider as she was with the Mutsy 4Rider Single Spoke. She looked so comfy, which is recommendation enough from an 8-month-old.
What to look out for
Much as we liked the Mutsy Urban Rider, the price is a hurdle. Even the most basic purchase – the chassis and a seat – would cost close to the £400 mark. Still, we all have our own budgets, and for some parents, the Mutsy Urban Rider will be an option that’s competitively priced compared to other models they’re looking at.
Because the seats for the 4Rider are the same for the Mutsy Urban Rider, I have the same problem with both buggies: that pushchair seat and hood get top marks for looks but offer insufficient protection from the sun and wind.
Who is the Mutsy Urban Rider best for?
Parents who want a buggy that corners brilliantly.
The Mutsy Urban Rider is a truly comfy and slick travel system. It’s a pleasure to steer and corner, can convert to be forward or rear facing, has a multitude of options, depending on what components you buy. However, the costs can mount up quickly depending on what parts you need to buy.
