If you were near the front of the line when they were handing out boobs you’ll know how tricky finding a decent nursing bra can be. The NCT Comfort Nursing Bra offers comfortable and affordable support that’ll help you through breastfeeding.

The National Childbirth Trust (NCT) was set up over 50 years ago; their aim is to improve their experience of being a parent in the UK. They’re a charity but have developed a range of products for pregnancy, childbirth and beyond. You can find their products, including the Comfort Nursing Bra on their website, which has a special shop section. I found myself at the NCT online shop when I was shopping for a nursing bra during my first pregnancy. I waited, very sensibly I thought, until the 37 or so weeks when you’re supposed to buy a nursing bra.

Having started my pregnancy at a fairly sizeable 40H I had an inkling that buying a nursing bra could be a little difficult. After all I’d spent most of my adult life hunting down decent supportive bras that didn’t resemble my grandmother’s underwear. But it was still a shock to find that my options were limited to around two or three companies. The NCT Comfort Nursing Bra offered me the size range I needed, 32-44 inch back and up to a K-cup, plus I knew the simple clean design would work well under the t-shirts I’d be chucking on between feeds and burping sessions.

I’ve got sensitive skin and sometimes react to super itchy lace so the cotton inner was a bonus. The neck edge has a pretty trim, shame it was only a very hungry newborn Mia who saw it. When my milk finally came in and I experienced my very own Dolly Parton moment (minus the plastic surgery) this bra really came into its own – it seemed to magically stretch to whatever gigantic proportions were needed on any given day. A life saver! Like many nursing bras it has drop cups, so fairly discreet feeding was possible (as subtle as you can be with boobie mountains).

What we love

The NCT Comfort Nursing Bra comes top of my list simply because it fits, and gives enough that I didn’t have to spend another small fortune on more baby kit. It’s nice to see that at least one company has recognised the need to create underwear for all shapes and sizes and they’ve considered the average age of the user by providing an elegant, simple design that I could wear under anything.

The cotton cups didn’t slip on my skin and so kept my breast pads in place and the bra itself was so light I could wear it day and night.

In typical new mum harassed style I didn’t always follow the correct washing instructions but the NCT Comfort Nursing Bras survived my attempts to destroy them at high temperatures. I didn’t take advantage of the home service, because I ordered the bras online, but the NCT do offer fittings and advice for maternity and nursing bras.

What to watch out for

The drop cups have a one-hand quick release clip, which was as easy as pie to undo, but a little more complicated to reattach. Mind you, what isn’t fiddly with a wriggling baby in one hand?

I think the unfortunate downside of the NCT Comfort Nursing Bra - and all the more surprising considering it’s designed specifically for larger cup sizes - is the lack of support. I found that no matter how tight I had the adjustable 4-position back fastening and how much I hoiked up the stretch straps, my boobs always sat on my newly deflated jelly stomach. I didn’t breastfed for a long time so I could live with the droopy effect for a few weeks but I think longer term I would have tried to track down a little more support.

MadeForMums verdict

The NCT Comfort Nursing Bra offers comfortable and affordable support that’ll help you through breastfeeding. It’s great if you were blessed in the chest department, going up to a 44 back and K-cup size. The cotton cups are perfect for sensitive skin, plus it has a clean and elegant design and enough stretch to accommodate excessive milk moments. You can buy online, or arrange an NCT home fitting appointment. The only downside is it’s not quite supportive enough.
