Silver Cross Coast review

The chassis is made from magnesium, making it strong yet lightweight. The Coast buggy is suitable from birth to 25kg so that it grows with your child. The addition of a ride on board means that it can cater for three children of varying ages with ease.

The Coast looks more modern and stylish than the Wave, and comes in earthy neutral shades. The frame is lighter (22lbs compared to the Wave’s 26lbs). It is more streamlined with smaller, narrower wheels. It has a more youthful, urban feel.

First Impressions of the Silver Cross Coast

This is a stylish buggy with a sleek black chassis, beautiful neutral coloured ombre fabrics and comfortable padding to get your child right off to sleep. You also have the beautiful chrome branding detail, typical of Silver Cross buggies. I was delighted to discover it offered everything I personally look for in a buggy. As a user and big fan of the Stokke Trailz, I was delighted to see that, like the Stoke, it had an elevated seat position with multi recline positions.

Being able to interact with your child without having to bend over is a big advantage. As I travel on public transport a lot I prefer the baby being in a high position so if the tube, train or bus driver slams on the brakes when its packed, there’s less likelihood of someone falling on top of my child. I also loved how easily you can change the seat from parent to forward facing.

There is a huge basket underneath the buggy. This was a vital feature for me, as I didn’t want to be pushing a buggy and trying to juggle bags.

I loved the adjustable integrated footrest and multi-position handlebar. The strong-looking wheels also caught my eye and I couldn’t wait to take this buggy out and about.

How easy is the Silver Cross Coast to assemble?

It’s super easy to assemble!

• Slot the wheels into place.
• Slip on the carrycot apron or the liner seat if you’re setting up the seat unit.
• Simply click the one you want to use onto the chassis
• Clip on the hood and bumper bar and away you go.

How do you fold the Silver Cross Coast?

It's super easy to fold.

• You simply hook your fingers through holes on either side of the chassis and hold down the button on the right hand side.
• Push down and the buggy collapses.

To unfold, you release a latch on the left hand side and pull the buggy upwards. It can be unfolded single-handedly.

How compact is it?

Folded its 94cm in length, 60cm in width and 34cm in height. Unfolded, it’s 92-112cm in length and 60cm in width. The handle height is 91cm to 107cm depending on which position you place it in. It did take up most of my hallway, but then I live in a Victorian terrace so my hallway is very narrow.

When using the car, it was easy to fit the folded buggy into our large boot. As the seat easily detaches from the chassis, you could take it apart if you found it easier to fit into your boot. The wheels easily clip on and off so you could also remove these if trying to squeeze it into a tight space.

How lightweight is the Silver Cross Coast?

The Coast is Silver Cross’s lightest single-to-double buggy. The chassis weighs 10.2kg. The carrycot weighs 4.9kg and the pushchair seat weighs 4.2kg. Considering how sturdy it looks and feels, I was pleasantly surprised by how lightweight the buggy felt. With only my 6 month old in it, I could push it with one hand.

Does the Coast cope well with different terrains?

A feature I loved about the Coast is its puncture proof tyres. My Stokke had rubber tyres, which I had to have repaired a few times due to punctures. As the Coast is styled for an urban environment, the puncture proof tyres are an essential feature as you do come across broken glass on pavements in busy cities. Aside from city use, I took the Coast to the woods, beach and over cobblestones at Beamish heritage museum. I was impressed with the ease at which it pushed over different terrains. It’s lockable swivel front wheels allowed for maximum maneuverability and its spring suspension made the ride smooth for my baby.

How comfortable is the Silver Cross Coast's handlebar to use?

The stitched leatherette handle is nice to hold and its multi-positions made it suitable for users of all heights. It’s really handy being able to lower the handle when trying to make room in an elevator or on public transport.

How comfortable is the Silver Cross Coast's seat?

The pushchair seat features one-handed multi-recline positions – full upright, snooze recline and full lie flat. It is fully reversible to be both forward facing and parent facing, in either a lower or higher position. One thing I loved about being able to have in the higher position was using the buggy as a high chair for feeding my son when visiting friends and family.

Can you use the carrycot for overnight sleeping?

The ventilated carrycot is suitable for overnight sleeping so you don’t have to worry about taking a travel cot with you when staying overnight. The bamboo fabric lining has natural antibacterial qualities and helps regulate temperature. The integrated, adjustable calf rest allows for maximum comfort. Overall, it’s well padded and my baby falls fast asleep when we’re out and about.

What do you think of the hood?

I love the size of the hood. It’s fully extendable with a pop-out sun peak to keep the sun out of your child’s eyes, which helps them to get a good sleep. Air vents help keep your child cool. It also offers UPF50+ protection and there’s a viewing window at the back so you can keep a check on your little one when they’re forward facing.

How effective are the Silver Cross Coast's brakes?

The easy step-on-step-off brake system is flip flop friendly. What I loved about this is that unlike other buggies, the position meant that I didn’t keep accidentally hitting it with my foot.

How big is the basket?

The basket is huge. I took the buggy through the airport with me and it held a baby seat, my backpack, coat and nappy bag.

Can the Coast be used with a car seat to create a travel system?

Yes. It comes with a set of adaptors making it compatible with Maxi Cosi Cabrio Fix, Maxi Cosi Pebble, Maxi Cosi Pebble Plus and the Silver Cross Simplicity car seat.

What accessories are available?

I used and would recommend the ride on board. It costs £95 but I loved how easily and securely it connects to the Coast. When you have it on, it doesn’t feel like an add-on, it feels like a part of the overall travel system. The ride on board is made from durable aluminum and the roughly textured board meant my toddler did not lose his grip when going up and down kerbs or slopes. It features two swivel wheels with puncture free tyres and I was surprised how good it was on all terrains. It glided along with the buggy. The ride on board comes with a handy strap, which attaches to the bottom of the board and to the basket so you can clip the board up out of the way when not in use.

What else did you really like about the Silver Cross Coast?

The rain cover on the Coast is so practical. There’s no annoying Velcro straps so you and your children are not left exposed to the rain while you try and fit it on. The cover simply pulls down over the seat and fits really snugly. The only thing I wish Silver Cross had added is a flap on the front so you could reach your child without having to lift up the rain cover.

Anything you didn't like about the Coast?

If pushed, I’d say I wish they hadn’t gone with a five-point harness, as it felt a bit stiff. There could be more items included in the box for the price. You only get one canopy and bumper bar. Both are removable so you can attach them to either the carrycot or the stroller seat. You also only get one rain cover.

Who is the Silver Cross Coast most useful for?

Anyone looking for a buggy that will take their child from newborn to toddler or anyone looking for a buggy that will carry both their newborn and an older child. Add a ride on board and you could carry three children. It is suitable for baby twins by using two car seats.

How much does it cost?

The Coast costs £950, and you need to purchase another seat at £225 plus adaptors to convert it to a double buggy putting at the premium end of the market.
