In a nutshell

This buggy gives a smooth ride, folds small enough to fit the boot of a Mini and has bags of urban style. The only niggles are the size of the shopping basket, and that some will prefer a buggy that can fold with seat attached.

Pros

  • Travel system compatible, easy to push, cosy enough to use from birth with lie-flat seat and Babynest, smooth ride, forward or rear facing mode, accessories included in price

Cons

  • Very small shopping basket, doesn't fold with seat attached

The Silver Cross Surf, a newcomer for the company in 2010, spent two years being developed. And it shows. The quality was evident from the moment I received the very compact-looking box – inside the Surf was carefully wrapped in tissue paper, like a gift.

The Silver Cross Surf boasts a huge range of features. Firstly are those helping it live up to Silver Cross’ claim that it can handle all terrains, including the beach. It has smooth air-sprung suspension that allows it to glide over the ground and puncture-resistant pneumatic tyres. It also has front forks and a rear wishbone so there’s no rear bar to kick as you walk along.

The cocooning Babynest insert and 100% flat seat recline will ensure your newborn is comfy. You can also buy a carrycot if you prefer. The Surf can be teamed with the Silver Cross Ventura Plus Group 0+ car seat, £115, to create a travel system, too. This attaches directly to the Surf’s chassis, just like the buggy seat does, so you don’t have to pay extra for adaptors. Check out our Silver Cross Surf travel system review for more info.

The Surf can be used as a rear facing or forward facing buggy and has a height adjustable handle. The chassis is also small when folded – it can fit in a classic Mini boot. You do need to take the seat off to fold though.

The Surf is lightweight, with magnesium alloy castings instead of aluminim. These are a third lighter than aluminum, and are usually the domain of aerospace companies and premium car manufacturers (think Bugati and Porsche).

The accessories pack includes a raincover, mosquito net, seat liner, newborn Babynest, hood, apron and parasol, and you can choose to have some of these in funky colours.

What we love

Silver Cross deserves a pat on the back for the Surf – it is such a well-built buggy and has a quality feel. I’d go so far as to say this is the best made buggy I’ve seen in a very long time. Even the bumper bar is wrapped in leather and the wheelbase is coated in what looks like the deep metallic paint you get on very nice cars.

The Surf’s air suspension is fantastic. Baby Freya and I really glided about, and it smoothed out the cobbles. No matter how bumpy the ground got, Freya remained undisturbed and asleep.

This air ride suspension also made a difference to me. It made the buggy easier to push than most others and cut down on the reverberations up the handle. Taking a long walk was certainly more relaxing.

The Babynest, a foam wedge insert with a lovely fleece surround that comes as standard, is wonderful. Plenty of buggies claim to be suitable from birth, and while many of these claims are true and the seat does recline fully flat, they still feel open and lacking in support for a newborn. With the Surf, the Babynest cocoons and supports your tiny baby.

Freya is no longer a newborn but is at that in-between stage - not quite able to sit up herself but still wanting to see what’s going on. By removing the foam wedge but still using the Babynest as side support, Freya’s able to look around without getting too wobbly.

Although the Surf isn’t a cheap option, you do get everything in the price, including a very sturdy raincover. This raincover is easy to fold up because it’s not just one huge bit of plastic but a fabric cover with a large plastic window. This may also prove to mean it won’t rip like some raincovers do.

What to watch out for

The Surf’s shopping basket is tiny – it’s more of a shopping pocket! All we managed to carry was the raincover and, because of the smooth ride, a cup of coffee.

However, we've heard that there should be a larger shopping basket that can clip onto the bottom due out soon.

Who is the Silver Cross Surf buggy best for?

Style-savvy mums after a top quality buggy that won’t balk at bumps.

MadeForMums verdict

The Silver Cross Surf is a stylish buggy that lives up to its claims. It offers a smooth ride, is a dream to push and comfy for your baby, right from birth. The useful accessories are included in the price, and the ability to use it as a forward or rear facing buggy and as a travel system really make it a versatile choice. Just make sure you buy buggy clips so you can get any shopping home.
