Pros

  • Could pass for non-maternity. Fashionable style. Should last throughout pregnancy.

Cons

  • Best suited to neat bumps. For style more than comfort.

Trendy mums-to-be will love Topshop’s Baxter jeans, which look as much like an ordinary pair of ‘skinnies’ as it’s possible to find.

These are tight-fitting trousers, so best suited to lucky mums-to-be with a pert bump who haven’t put on too much weight elsewhere. The under-the-bump fit won’t flatter muffin tops, and the drainpipe legs are a pretty tight squeeze!

Because the waistband fits under your bump and there are a few ways to adjust the waist size, these are a good buy to last the average bump all through pregnancy. There are belt loops so you can add a belt for a snug fit in early pregnancy, and stretchy side panels plus two button adjustors to let the waistband out for your third trimester.

There’s not a huge amount of stretch, but the fabric is thick, tough and good quality. They’re not super-comfy for lounging about in, but are a good fashion buy as they look great when you’re out and about and dress up well for evenings. The variety of washes will allow you to recreate your look of choice, too. Pricewise these compare to Topshop’s standard range of jeans, and what you’d expect to pay on the high street.

The design is fairly simple, with no branding and little detailing – no decorative stitching on the back pockets, for instance. The back pockets themselves are fairly large, and there are also two small change pockets at the front.

What we love

You may be happy to wear these after your pregnancy too – the on-trend styling and subtle maternity adjustables mean they look pretty much like non-maternity jeans. They’re good quality and should last throughout your nine months and beyond.

What to watch out for

As with most low-rise skinnies, there’s a certain amount of exposure when you bend over! The tight fit means they can also be a bit of a struggle to get into.
The range of colour washes is great, but including a black version would be even better.

Who are Topshop’s Baxter jeans best for?

Ideal for yummy mummies who want to maintain their own style without looking too ‘maternity’.
