As its name suggests, the G-Luxe has a genuine luxury feel. Its real selling point, however, is its weight. Though this buggy is full-sized and feels sturdy to push, it weighs a highly competitive 5kg (11lb).
Unlike many other buggies, which are suitable until your child is 15kg (about 3 years), the G-Luxe can be used up to 22.5kg (50lb)
What we love
I instantly loved the style of the G-Luxe. It looks sporty and modern without being too 'novelty' or naff. The materials feel genuinely good quality, with the seat padding scoring extra brownie points - for once it looks like something I wouldn't mind sitting on myself.
While full size, the G-Luxe still feels compact and, crucially, almost a couple of kilograms lighter than similar full sized umbrella-fold buggies on the market. This difference might sound small, but it's something you definitely notice, especially when pushing an older toddler. It felt easier to wheel my really-rather-hefty 2-year-old around my local high street than in my usual model (a Maclaren XT), and was super-light to steer, even when loaded up with groceries in the bottom basket. Generally, the buggy had a smooth action on the pavement, and I didn't feel puffed out navigating slopes and hills.
One neat touch is the fact you don't need any foot action to fold this buggy – it can all be done using your hands. Any mum who's ever tried to push down a stiff buggy foot release clip wearing flimsy flip-flops will know how painful this can be!
The buggy is designed to stand upright when folded, which is handy for those stashing it in tight spaces (such me, with my poky porch).
I also like the sun canopy. Again, this is so stylish, and protective up to UV50, which gives peace of mind on sunny days.
The G-Luxe comes with a snap-on cupholder, a thoughtful added extra. The raincover (included) is easy to attach as it uses Velcro straps instead of fiddly clips at the top, plus it has a mesh air vent to stop your child steaming up during cloudbursts.
Finally the leg/footrest was a doddle to move up and down, with a smooth action and fast release buttons.
What to watch out for
There's no carrying handle - a minor irritation that makes everyday life a little easier. Instead, the UPPAbaby G-Luxe has a travel shoulder strap so you can carry it 'guitar style', which might not work for everyone.
The ergonomic handlebars were nice and high (so easy on the back) but some parents might not like the spongy finish.
The biggest drawback for me is adjusting the seat back. It works using a drawstring toggle mechanism, which I found slightly fiddly - at first the clip wouldn't 'lock' meaning my son slid back down into a recumbent position. Great for encouraging ad hoc naps (he soon fell asleep), not so great if your little one wants to sit up and look around!
Who is the UPPAbaby G-Luxe lightweight buggy best for?
Modern mums who want to team lightness and an umbrella fold with a luxurious finish.
The UPPAbaby G-Luxe is one of the best-looking lightweight buggies around, with a competitive price for the quality. While lighter than similar models on the market, it feels sturdy and posh to push. The only potential downside is the toggle seat recline mechanism.
