The VTech Sail and Steer Gym is a fun sea-themed play gym and activity centre in one, designed to keep your baby entertained into the toddler years.
The Sail and Steer Gym 2 in 1 gym is - as the name suggests - a two-in-one play gym from VTech that changes from a laying-down gym to a sitting-up activity centre. In gym mode your baby is encouraged to interact by tapping the dangling animals. In the sailing mode, your toddler becomes captain of her ship. Both modes are accompanied by melodies, sing-along songs and fun sound effects to make your baby giggle.
What we love
I found that as my baby develops she increasingly needs more stimulation. I loved watching Isabella shrieking with delight as she managed to kick the dangling toys and they made a sound. She also loved the flashing lights and bright colours.
My friend’s baby is over 6 months old and because she’s able to sit up unaided the steering wheel was a big hit. Unlike a lot of play gyms on the market, the VTech Sail and Steer 2 in 1 is great for older babies and even toddlers as it introduces them to basic letters, numbers and animals.
What to watch out for
The mat is promoted as being soft, but I’ve got hard wooden floors and it was uncomfortable for my baby to lie on for too long - it really needs to be on a rug or carpet.
Another thing to watch out for was when I turned my back for one second I found Isabella had flipped over for the first time and was lying half off the mat and on the hard red plastic, so as you baby gets older you have to watch that she doesn’t roll off.
While this is a fun play gym it’s not that portable as once you have put it together you can’t disassemble it, which is also annoying when you want to store it.
Who is the VTech Sail and Steer 2 in 1 Gym best for?
Tactile babies and toddlers who need lots of stimulation and get bored easily.
The VTech Sail and Steer 2 in 1 Gym grows with your baby, so you get your money’s worth. It encourages language development through songs and sensory stimulation with lights, colours and textures, as well as developing your child’s motor skills. It’s not ideal for travelling because it doesn’t fold up, but it’s great for a playroom.
