As the name gives away, Waitrose Fragrance Free Biodegradable Baby Wipes are unscented and are biodegradable. What the name doesn’t tell you is these are thick and effective at cleaning up at the messiest of nappy changes.

Waitrose is renowned for being the superior supermarket brand. True to form, its fragrance-free baby wipes, Waitrose Fragrance Free Biodegradable Baby Wipes, compare well to similar basics found at competing stores. Instore, a pack of 72 wipes will cost you £1.49, and they’re cheaper if bought online at Ocado.com.

There's no doubt that Waitrose Fragrance Free Biodegradable Baby Wipes are much greener than the average baby wipe. Apparently these wipes will biodegrade in a biologically active landfill sites within 6-12 months – so that's a big tick. They’re also alcohol-free, and formulated to help protect against the causes of nappy rash.

The packaging is fairly basic, though for some reason my son is fascinated by the large central photograph of another baby!

What we loved

I've tried all manner of budget baby wipes, and though these are a little more expensive than some supermarket brands, they were more pleasant to use. The cloths are soaked in a fragrance-free moisturising lotion, they're nice and mild, and did seem genuinely thicker and easier to use than their competitors, working well on even the messiest nappy areas. They have a plastic snap-pack opening, which is simpler to seal up than peel-away stickers.

They’re also paraben-free, while other basic wipes I've used are not. Whether or not you're concerned about these common chemicals found in all manner of bath and beauty products is a personal choice, as the jury is still out on how dangerous they may or may not be. But I did find it reassuring that unnecessary chemicals weren't being slathered all over my baby's skin at regular intervals.

What to watch out for

These are Waitrose wipes and while you get what you pay for, what you pay more is inevitably more – which might not suit you if you're on a tight budget. The cheapest way to buy these wipes is online at Ocado.com, where you can get four packs for £4.90.

While paraben-free, there are greener wipes out there in terms of chemical content.
