The Urmston & District Railway Society operates mini steam train rides for young children on Sundays at the family-friendly Abbotsfield Park. Find it on Chassen Road. The SatNav postcode is X.

Cost

£- The park is free to enter, though the rides cost. It’s very inexpensive at 30p per steam train ride. Yes, you heard me right. Several rides, it is!

What’s on offer

Every Sunday, families with young children can enjoy a miniature steam train ride around the perimeter of Abbotsfield Park. The park also offers Under 5’s and children’s play areas, tarmacked tennis courts and a bowling green.

Highlights

The park has a peaceful atmosphere and the train staff members are really enthusiastic and smiley, which is important for keeping little ones happy! It’s also excellent value for money, as you can ride more than once and there are two children’s playgrounds nearby. Take a picnic in Abbotsfield Park after your rides and you’ve got yourself a nice few hours and about in Manchester.

What to watch out for

  • Sometimes this park is known locally as ‘Chassen Park’.
  • There are no toilets here, which can obviously be very problematic! There are bathrooms at a pub nearby.
  • It’s not too easy to find on public transport. Make sure you plan ahead and work out an appropriate route, and prepare to walk a little bit. Keep an eye out for buses running past Church Road and Flixton Road.

MFM tips:

  • Ring the park using the number on the official website to help you determine whether the rides are definitely on on your chosen visit day!
