Who knew Curly Wurlys could make such brilliant reindeer antlers? This ingenious decorating idea based around a simple cookie recipe is perfect for Christmas baking with kids. Stick on your favourite Santa/reindeer tunes to sing along to as you decorate – and save the biggest glacé cherry for the Rudolph cookie...

  • 350g plain flour
  • 2 tsp ground ginger
  • 1 tsp cinnamon
  • ½ tsp mixed spice
  • ¼ tsp salt
  • 1 tsp bicarbonate of soda
  • ½ tsp baking powder
  • 175g butter
  • 150g soft light brown sugar
  • 4 tbsp golden syrup

For the decoration

  • Curly Wurlys
  • glacé cherries
  • M & Ms
  • black writing icing pen

    Method

    • step 1

      Preheat the oven to 180°C/Fan 160°C/350°F/Gas mark 4. Measure the flour, spices, salt, bicarbonate of soda and baking powder into a bowl

    • step 2

      Melt the butter, sugar and syrup in a pan. Pour this into the dry ingredients and mix. Lightly knead together to make a dough

    • step 3

      Form the dough into 10 balls. Pinch out one end of each ball to form a point, then flatten it with your hand to make a head shape

    • step 4

      Place the cookies on a baking sheet and bake for 12 to 15 minutes until the cookies are lightly golden but still slightly soft

    • step 5

      Using a skewer, make a slit on either side of the cookie heads for slotting in the antlers, then leave to cool for a few minutes

    • step 6

      Decorate each cookie with lengths of Curly Wurly for the antlers and halved glacé cherries for the nose. Take 2 M&Ms of the same colour for the eyes and dot each with black icing for the pupils
