Packed with dates, prunes and nuts, and sweetened with honey and cocoa powder, these vegan, dairy-free treats taste delicious – but look positively gruesome! What more could you want from Halloween grub?

They can be made 1 day ahead. Keep them in the fridge until you're ready to serve them.

  • 75g walnuts
  • 90g almonds
  • 5 prunes
  • 3 dried dates
  • 2 tbsp maple syrup
  • 1 tbsp honey
  • A pinch of salt
    optional
  • ¼ tsp ground cloves
  • 1 tsp cocoa powder
  • ¼ tsp ground cardamom

For decoration

  • pumpkin seeds
  • 1 tsp red fruit puree or jam

    Method

    • step 1

      In a food processor, blend the almonds and walnuts until they're almost completely ground. Set the mixture aside

    • step 2

      Now blend the prunes, dates, maple syrup and honey until a paste is formed. Add water if needed

    • step 3

      Add the almond-and-walnut mix, salt, cocoa and spices and blend until a dough forms

    • step 4

      Divide the dough into 3cm-diameter balls and then roll them into finger shapes

    • step 5

      Place a pumpkin seed at the tip of each finger, using small amount of fruit purée or jam

    • step 6

      Keep refrigerated until needed
