Meet the expert: Dr Philippa Kaye
Here's everything you need to know about Dr Philippa Kaye
Who is Dr Philippa Kaye?
Dr Philippa Kaye is a GP who works in the NHS and private practice. She's always lived in London, apart from 3 years outside the capital studying for her medical degree at Downing College, Cambridge.
After her time at university, Philippa returned home and studied at Guy’s, King’s and St Thomas’ medical schools for her clinical training.
What's Philippa's expertise?
Dr Philippa has trained in paediatrics, gynaecology, care of the elderly and acute medicine, psychiatry and then general practice. She's now a regular on TV, becoming the go-to family doctor for advice on Coronavirus on breakfast TV.
Can you explain Philippa's connection to MadeForMums?
We've worked in partnership with Dr Philippa for many years, requesting her medical expertise and advice on lots of the topics we cover.
She's featured in a couple of our MadeForMums pregnancy podcasts - talking about the accuracy of gender prediction tests and common questions to ask the doctor when you find out you're pregnant
What else does Philippa do?
Probably Dr Philippa's biggest 'role' apart from being a super busy GP is that of being a mum to 3 children.
Being a mother is the most important job that I do, as well as often being the most challenging! Parenthood has changed how I practise my medicine: I am far better able to empathise with the combination of joy and terror that children bring! I wish I had known, especially the first time around, is that there is no one best or correct way to parent: as long as your child is happy, healthy and safe, you are doing OK. Everyone has a different opinion on how to do things and, if their way is different, it does not mean that your way is wrong!
The advice she gives is always practical and takes into account everything else going on in a busy parent's life when they realise their child is unwell / or they themselves are unwell.
Dr Philippa has also written numerous books on children's health, pregnancy fitness, diabetes and more – including Baby & Child Health, Your Pregnancy Week By Week and The First Five Years.
Her book Your Pregnancy Week By Week has received a 4.5 star review on Amazon, with one person saying: "I bought this, with a trillion other books the second I got that little red line!
"I have to say this is the book I turned to time and again throughout my pregnancy to see what little baba was up to and what to expect. It was a really good useful reference book. I would recommend it."
She's also ambassador for Jo's Cervical Cancer Trust, and a TV and radio journalist. Perhaps her most unusual TV appearance was carrying out a smear test live on the Victoria Derbyshire show.
