What is Disney’s Snow White about?

Disney’s Snow White (2025) is a live-action reimagining of the beloved 1937 animated classic Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs – the studio’s very first feature-length film. In this updated version, the fairytale is told with a modern lens while still embracing the charm and heart of the original.

The story follows Snow White, a kind-hearted young princess who is forced to flee her kingdom when her jealous stepmother, the Evil Queen, becomes obsessed with being the "fairest of them all."

Exiled to a mysterious forest, Snow White discovers friendship, courage and hope with the help of a group of unlikely companions – and ultimately finds the strength to reclaim her voice and challenge the darkness threatening her world.

Rachel Zegler brings a fresh energy to the title role, portraying Snow White as not just gentle and kind, but also intelligent, optimistic and determined. Gal Gadot’s Evil Queen is a more layered villain than in past versions – still cruel and calculating, but with a more complex edge that adds depth to the story.

The film introduces new characters, including Jonathan (played by Andrew Burnap), a singing male lead created specifically for this adaptation, who helps drive the emotional core of the narrative. Meanwhile, the iconic dwarfs are reimagined with a diverse ensemble cast that adds both humour and heart.

With direction from Marc Webb and a screenplay by Greta Gerwig and Erin Cressida Wilson, this Snow White keeps the fairytale magic alive but refreshes it for today’s audience – particularly younger viewers who might be encountering the story for the first time.

Musically, the film shines with all-new original songs by Benj Pasek and Justin Paul (La La Land, The Greatest Showman), including “Waiting on a Wish” – a heartfelt ballad inspired by the tradition of Disney Princess “I Want” songs like Part of Your World and Reflection.

Whether you're a fan of the original or discovering Snow White through your children, this version promises a mix of nostalgia, bold storytelling, and Disney magic made for a new generation.

Is Snow White suitable for children?

Disney’s Snow White has been rated PG by the BBFC for mild violence, scary scenes, and injury detail, making it generally suitable for children aged 8 and over, with some parental guidance recommended.

The film contains scenes of mild threat, including an evil queen attempting to poison her stepdaughter, and moments that could be frightening for younger viewers – such as a tense forest sequence and a sinister transformation. There are brief scenes of violence, like a man being shot with an arrow, as well as mild rude humour and fleeting injury detail.

While most of the content is in line with what families expect from a Disney fairytale, parents of sensitive or younger children may want to be aware of these darker moments. Comic relief and a classic Disney romance help balance the tone, and there’s no strong language or persistent peril.

For many families, Snow White should be a magical – if slightly spooky – watch that’s perfect for an older primary school audience.

Can I watch Snow White at home yet?

Not just yet. Snow White will be released in cinemas first, but home viewing options will follow soon after.

Based on Disney’s recent release strategy, here’s what we expect:

Digital release (buy or rent): Expected from 20th May 2025

You should be able to buy or rent Snow White on platforms like Amazon Prime Video, Apple TV+, and Google Play around 60 days after it hits cinemas. Expect to pay around £19.99 to purchase and £15.99 to rent, with a 30-day window to start viewing and 48 hours to finish once you begin.

Streaming on Disney+: Expected from 25th June 2025

Disney has not confirmed a date yet, but most of their theatrical releases arrive on Disney+ around 96–100 days after release. That puts Snow White on track to stream by late June or early July 2025.

Where will Snow White be available to stream?

Snow White will stream exclusively on Disney+. The film will not be available on Netflix or Amazon Prime Video as part of their subscriptions.

If you're not a subscriber yet, Disney+ offers plans starting at £4.99 per month for the ad-supported version, or £8.99 and £12.99 per month for ad-free tiers.

What else can I watch while I wait?

If your little ones are keen for a preview, Disney+ is already streaming a 3-minute special look at Snow White. It includes interviews with Rachel Zegler and the songwriters behind the film, plus a sneak peek of one of the new songs.

You can also revisit the 1937 original animated film on Disney+, along with other recent live-action remakes like The Little Mermaid and Cinderella.

Is Snow White worth the wait?

Early reactions have praised Rachel Zegler’s portrayal of the iconic princess and the film’s fresh musical direction. Gal Gadot promises a darker, more complex Evil Queen, while new character Jonathan (played by Andrew Burnap) adds a twist to the traditional tale.

With its blend of nostalgia and modern storytelling, Snow White is shaping up to be a standout family film for 2025. The BBFC rating is expected to be PG, making it a perfect pick for family movie night once it’s available to stream.

Looking forward to it? Popcorn at the ready – your next family movie night is just a few months away.
